RESUMO

To assess the skiing economy (SE) and kinematics during double poling (DP) roller skiing between two groups of skiers in a field setting. Five experienced and five novice male skiers performed a SEDP test at 16 km∙h-1 on an outdoor athletics track. Gas exchange parameters were measured to determine SEDP. A two-dimensional video was filmed to measure the kinematics variables. Experienced skiers exhibited a 21% lower oxygen cost than novice skiers (p = 0.016) in DP, indicating a strong association between SEDP, cycle length and cycle rate (p < 0.001). Additionally, before the poling phase, experienced skiers manifested significantly greater maximum hip and knee extension angles than novice skiers (p < 0.001). During the poling phase, experienced skiers with a greater pole plant angle (p = 0.001), longer flexion time (p < 0.001) and higher flexion angular velocity in the elbow joint (p < 0.05) demonstrated better SEDP. There was an interaction effect of the one-repetition maximum bench press × group in SEDP (b = - 0.656, SE = 0.097, t = - 6.78, p = 0.001). Therefore, experienced skiers with better SEDP demonstrated more efficient cycles, potentially accomplished using dynamic full-body DP motion to ascertain effective propulsion. Combined upper body strength and ski-specific skill training may enhance SEDP in novice skiers.

RESUMO

Current electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are either expensive (such as IrO2, RuO2) or/and exhibit high overpotential as well as sluggish kinetics. This article reports mesoporous earth-abundant iron (Fe)-nitrogen (N) doped carbon electrocatalysts with iron clusters and closely surrounding Fe-N4 active sites. Unique to this work is that the mechanically stable mesoporous carbon-matrix structure (79 nm in pore size) with well-dispersed nitrogen-coordinated Fe single atom-cluster is synthesized via rapid thermal annealing (RTA) within only minutes using a self-assembled bottlebrush block copolymer (BBCP) melamine-formaldehyde resin composite template. The resulting porous structure and domain size can be tuned with the degree of polymerization of the BBCP backbone, which increases the electrochemically active surface area and improves electron transfer and mass transport for an effective OER process. The optimized electrocatalyst shows a required potential of 1.48 V (versus RHE) to obtain the current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte and a small Tafel slope of 55 mV/decade at a given overpotential of 250 mV, which is significantly lower than recently reported earth-abundant electrocatalysts. Importantly, the Fe single-atom nitrogen coordination environment facilitates the surface reconstruction into a highly active oxyhydroxide under OER conditions, as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy, while the atomic clusters boost the single atoms reactive sites to prevent demetalation during the OER process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support that the iron nitrogen environment and reconstructed oxyhydroxides are electrocatalytically active sites as the kinetics barrier is largely reduced. This work has opened a new avenue for simple, rapid synthesis of inexpensive, earth-abundant, tailorable, mechanically stable, mesoporous carbon-coordinated single-atom electrocatalysts that can be used for renewable energy production.

RESUMO

The Elastic acupuncture needle, a set of clinical device used in randomized controlled trials of acupuncture is developed, which may potentially obtain the double-blind placebo control. This kind of acupuncture device consists of a real needle and a sham one (placebo needle) with a identical appearance. Either of the needle is composed of an integrated cap-type handle and needle body, and a sterile double-sided adhesive pad is designed on the bottom for fixation. A spring with miniature low profile is built in sham needle. During operation, the real needle can be normally inserted, while the sham one be retracted because of the elasticity generated by the pressure on the skin, but deqi can still be felt by patients whenever the force difference between the skin and the spring reaches a certain balance. The rubber pad designed in this acupuncture needle can simulate the "resistance" felt by operators during needle insertion so that the double blinding is actualized in terms of the appearance and sensations.

RESUMO

Regioselective arene C-H bond alkylation is a powerful tool in synthetic chemistry, yet subject to many challenges. Herein, we report the meta-C-H bond alkylation of aromatics bearing N-directing groups using (hetero)aromatic epoxides as alkylating agents. This method results in complete regioselectivity on both the arene as well as the epoxide coupling partners, cleaving exclusively the benzylic C-O bond. Oxetanes, which are normally unreactive, also participate as alkylating reagents under the reaction conditions. Our mechanistic studies reveal an unexpected reversible epoxide ring opening process undergoing catalyst-controlled regioselection, as key for the observed high regioselectivities.

RESUMO

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) use the chemical cues emitted by insects and insect-damaged plants to locate their hosts. Steinernema carpocapsae, a species of EPN, is an established biocontrol agent used against insect pests. Despite its promising potential, the molecular mechanisms underlying its ability to detect plant volatiles remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the response of S. carpocapsae infective juveniles (IJs) to 8 different plant volatiles. Among these, carvone was found to be the most attractive volatile compound. To understand the molecular basis of the response of IJs to carvone, we used RNA-Seq technology to identify gene expression changes in response to carvone treatment. Transcriptome analysis revealed 721 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between carvone-treated and control groups, with 403 genes being significantly upregulated and 318 genes downregulated. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that the responsive DEGs to carvone attraction were mainly involved in locomotion, localization, behavior, response to stimulus, and olfactory transduction. We also identified four upregulated genes of chemoreceptor and response to stimulus that were involved in the response of IJs to carvone attraction. Our results provide insights into the potential transcriptional mechanisms underlying the response of S. carpocapsae to carvone, which can be utilized to develop environmentally friendly strategies for attracting EPNs.

RESUMO

Microtubules, composed of αß-tubulin heterodimers, are crucial targets for chemotherapeutic agents and possess eight binding sites. Our previous study identified cevipabulin as the only one agent capable of simultaneously binding to two different sites (Vinblastine site and The Seventh site). Binding to The Seventh site by cevipabulin induces tubulin degradation. This study aimed to investigate whether it is binding to the Vinblastine site and The Seventh site exhibited an interactive cellular effect. Surprisingly, we discovered that cevipabulin induced abnormal tubulin protofilaments polymerization, a previously undefined tubulin morphology, and we proved it was an interactive effect of Cevipabulin's binding to both Vinblastine site and The Seventh site. Immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy confirmed cevipabulin induced the formation of linear tubulin protofilaments and their subsequent aggregation into irregular tubulin aggregates. Competition binding assays and the αY224G mutation revealed that binding of cevipabulin to both sites was necessary for the tubulin protofilaments polymerization effect. Moreover, we found that co-treatment with a microtubule stabilization agent binding the Vinblastine site and a microtubule destabilization agent binding at the intra-dimer interface of tubulin could also induce similar tubulin protofilaments polymerization. We proposed a mechanism where a microtubule stabilization agent on the Vinblastine site enhances longitudinal interactions between tubulin dimers, while, a microtubule destabilization agent binding at the intra-dimer interface prevents the adoption of a straight conformation of the tubulin dimer and disrupts lateral interactions between tubulins, consequently leading to tubulin protofilaments polymerization. This study reported a new inhibitor-induced-tubulin-morphology-change and would provide insight into tubulin dynamic instability and also guide further study of cevipabulin.

RESUMO

Groundwater reservoirs play an important role in regional water volume balance. In order to ensure the efficiency of a groundwater reservoir and obtain its maximum value, it is necessary to figure out its characteristics, such as minimum water level, normal water level, and maximum water level. The characteristics not only determined the storage capacity but also influenced the water allocation and utilization. Therefore, this paper took a groundwater reservoir built in an alluvial fan as an example to assess its storage capacity and the influence on water dynamic control. The alluvial fan was located in the front of Lao River, where there were an alluvial-diluvial fan, groundwater storage space, and natural impervious boundary. Therefore, it was an ideal place for constructing a groundwater reservoir. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the storage capacity was determined, and the influence of groundwater reservoir characteristics on water dynamic control was analyzed. On this basis, the water-supply method in the research area was confirmed. This paper will present a new method for repairing the groundwater system and protecting the ecological environment.

RESUMO

The high prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in China suggests there would be a substantial positive health impact of widespread vaccination against HPV. We adapted a previously described dynamic transmission model of the natural history of HPV infection and related diseases to the Chinese setting to estimate the public health impact in China of 2-valent (with and without cross-protection), 4-valent, and 9-valent HPV vaccination strategies. The model predicted the incidence and mortality associated with HPV-related diseases, including cervical and noncervical cancers, genital warts, and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), based on the various vaccination coverage rate (VCR) scenarios, over a 100-year time horizon. The public health impact of the 4 vaccination strategies was estimated in terms of cases and deaths averted compared to a scenario with no vaccination. Under the assumption of various primary and catch-up VCR scenarios, all 4 vaccination strategies reduced the incidence of cervical cancer in females and noncervical cancers in both sexes, and the 4-valent and 9-valent vaccines reduced the incidence of genital warts and RRP in both sexes. The 9-valent vaccination strategy was superior on all outcomes. The number of cervical cancer cases averted over 100 years ranged from ~ 1 million to ~ 5 million while the number of cervical cancer deaths averted was ~ 345,000 to ~ 1.9 million cases, depending on the VCR scenario. The VCR for primary vaccination was the major driver of cases averted.

RESUMO

We report the use of polymer N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to control the microenvironment surrounding metal nanocatalysts, thereby enhancing their catalytic performance in CO2 electroreduction. Three polymer NHC ligands were designed with different hydrophobicity: hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-NHC), hydrophobic polystyrene (PS-NHC), and amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP) (PEO-b-PS-NHC). All three polymer NHCs exhibited enhanced reactivity of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) during CO2 electroreduction by suppressing proton reduction. Notably, the incorporation of hydrophobic PS segments in both PS-NHC and PEO-b-PS-NHC led to a twofold increase in the partial current density for CO formation, as compared to the hydrophilic PEO-NHC. While polymer ligands did not hinder ion diffusion, their hydrophobicity altered the localized hydrogen bonding structures of water. This was confirmed experimentally and theoretically through attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation, demonstrating improved CO2 diffusion and subsequent reduction in the presence of hydrophobic polymers. Furthermore, NHCs exhibited reasonable stability under reductive conditions, preserving the structural integrity of AuNPs, unlike thiol-ended polymers. The combination of NHC binding motifs with hydrophobic polymers provides valuable insights into controlling the microenvironment of metal nanocatalysts, offering a bioinspired strategy for the design of artificial metalloenzymes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: In addition to its established role in regulating circadian rhythms and reducing inflammation, melatonin has been demonstrated to possess anti-cancer properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of exosomal miRNAs released by melatonin-treated GC cells on gastric cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To identify the potential exosomal miRNAs involved in the treatment of gastric cancer, we performed exosome small RNA sequencing (sRNA-seq) to screen significant changes in 34 exosomal miRNAs in AGS cells before and after melatonin treatment. CCK-8, wound healing, and transwell invasion assays were used to examine the effects of miRNAs on cancer characteristics. Furthermore, a dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to identify the miRNA targets. RESULTS: Exosomal miR-27b-3p was down-regulated by approximately 1.37-fold following melatonin treatment. The CCK-8 assay revealed a significant increase in cell proliferation in the miR-27b-3p mimic group compared to that in the miR-27b-3p mimic NC group. In the wound healing assay, cells treated with miR-27b-3p mimics displayed significantly more rapid wound closure than that observed in the miR-27b-3p mimic NC group. The transwell invasion assay revealed a substantial increase in the number of invading cells in the miR-27b-3p mimic group compared to that in the miR-27b-3p mimic NC group. Additional analysis revealed that miR-27b-3p directly targets ADAMTS5 and that its up-regulation results in increased proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of GC cells. CONCLUSION: Melatonin suppressed the progression of gastric cancer by regulating the exosomal miR-27b-3p-ADAMTS5 pathway. Thus, melatonin represents a promising potential therapeutic agent for patients with gastric cancer.

RESUMO

The paper explores the evolution of "bone-approaching" acupuncture, its effect target and mechanism. The concrete operation procedure of "bone-approaching" method is recorded originally in Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor) as short needling and Shu needling (referring to the category of the five needling technique). The periosteum is the most effective stimulation target of "bone-approaching" acupuncture for analgesia, regaining consciousness and regulating spirit. The "bone-approaching" acupuncture is not only prominently effective on bone bi syndrome, but also has the unique effect on painful, encephalogenic and emotional diseases. The paper summarizes and improves "bone-approaching" acupuncture, i.e. "touching bone surface" with needle tip by slow insertion, "touching bone surface" without pain by swift insertion and "touching bone" with needle body by oblique insertion. It contributes to the inheritance, development and supplementation to the bone needling techniques in Huangdi Neijing and is significant for broadening the clinical application range of acupuncture.

RESUMO

Nanocrystal-based light-emitting diodes (Nc-LEDs) have immense potential for next-generation high-definition displays and lighting applications. They offer numerous advantages, such as low cost, high luminous efficiency, narrow emission, and long lifetime. However, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of Nc-LEDs, typically employing isotropic nanocrystals, is limited by the out-coupling factor. Here efficient, bright, and long lifetime red Nc-LEDs based on anisotropic nanocrystals of colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) are demonstrated. Through modification of the substrate's surface properties and control of the interactions among CQWs, a self-assembled layer with an exceptionally high distribution of in-plane transitions dipole moment of 95%, resulting in an out-coupling factor of 37% is successfully spin-coated. The devices exhibit a remarkable peak EQE of 26.9%, accompanied by a maximum brightness of 55 754 cd m-2 and a long operational lifetime (T95 @100 cd m-2 ) over 15 000 h. These achievements represent a significant advancement compared to previous studies on Nc-LEDs incorporating anisotropic nanocrystals. The work is expected to provide a general self-assembly strategy for enhancing the light extraction efficiency of Nc-LEDs based on anisotropic nanocrystals.

RESUMO

Solid-electrolyte interphases (SEIs) in advanced rechargeable batteries ensure reversible electrode reactions at extreme potentials beyond the thermodynamic stability limits of electrolytes by insulating electrons while allowing the transport of working ions. Such selective ion transport occurs naturally in biological cell membranes as a ubiquitous prerequisite of many life processes and a foundation of biodiversity. In addition, cell membranes can selectively open and close the ion channels in response to external stimuli (e.g., electrical, chemical, mechanical, and thermal), giving rise to "gating" mechanisms that help manage intracellular reactions. We wondered whether the chemistry and structure of SEIs can mimic those of cell membranes, such that ion gating can be replicated. That is, can SEIs realize a reversible switching between two electrochemical behaviors, i.e., the ion intercalation chemistry of batteries and the ion adsorption of capacitors? Herein, we report such SEIs that result in thermally activated selective ion transport. The function of open/close gate switches is governed by the chemical and structural dynamics of SEIs under different thermal conditions, with precise behaviors as conducting and insulating interphases that enable battery and capacitive processes within a finite temperature window. Such an ion gating function is synergistically contributed by Arrhenius-activated ion transport and SEI dissolution/regrowth. Following the understanding of this new mechanism, we then develop an electrochemical method to heal the SEI layer in situ. The knowledge acquired in this work reveals the possibility of hitherto unknown biomimetic properties of SEIs, which will guide us to leverage such complexities to design better SEIs for future battery chemistries.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is the most common subtype of mitochondrial encephalopathy. In the past, it was believed that most hereditary white matter lesions were lysosome storage disorders or peroxisome diseases. However, in recent years, white matter lesions have been increasingly regarded as a common feature of patients with mitochondrial diseases. In addition to stroke-like lesions, about half of the patients with MELAS reported white matter lesions in the brain. PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, we provide a case of A 48-year-old female who presented with episodic loss of consciousness with twitching of extremities. Previous medical history revealed 10 years of history of epilepsy, 10 years of history of diabetes, a history of hearing loss, and unknown etiology. Ancillary findings included brain magnetic fluid-attenuated inversion recovery showed symmetrical lesions in the bilateral parietal lobe with high signal intensity at the edge, and high signal intensity in the bilateral occipital lobe, paraventricular white matter, corona radiata, and the center of semiovale. DIAGNOSES: Mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid gene sequencing returned A3243G point mutation and it supports the diagnosis of intracranial hypertension. INTERVENTIONS: Considered the diagnosis of symptomatic epilepsy, the patient was treated with mechanical ventilation, midazolam, and levetiracetam, and the limb twitching symptoms were controlled. The patient was comatose, chronically bedridden, with gastrointestinal dysfunction, and was treated prophylactically with antibiotics against infection, parenteral nutrition, and other supportive measures. B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, and idebenone were given, and mechanical ventilation and midazolam were stopped after 8 days. He was discharged from the hospital on 30 days and continued symptomatic treatment with B-vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, and idebenone, and antiepileptic treatment with levetiracetam, with outpatient follow-up. OUTCOMES: No further seizures were recorded and the patient recovered well. LESSONS: MELAS syndrome without stroke-like episodes of diffuse posterior cerebral white matter lesions is rare in clinical practice, and the possibility of MELAS syndrome should be considered in symmetric posterior cerebral white matter lesions.

RESUMO

Out-of-plane (OP) exciton-based emitters in two-dimensional semiconductor materials are attractive candidates for novel photonic applications, such as radially polarized sources, integrated photonic chips, and quantum communications. However, their low quantum efficiency resulting from forbidden transitions limits their practicality. In this work, we achieve a giant enhancement of up to 34000 for OP exciton emission in indium selenide (InSe) via a designed Ag nanocube-over-Au film plasmonic nanocavity. The large photoluminescence enhancement factor (PLEF) is attributed to the induced OP local electric field (Ez) within the nanocavity, which facilitates effective OP exciton-plasmon interaction and subsequent tremendous enhancement. Moreover, the nanoantenna effect resulting from the effective interaction improves the directivity of spontaneous radiation. Our results not only reveal an effective photoluminescence enhancement approach for OP excitons but also present an avenue for designing on-chip photonic devices with an OP dipole orientation.

RESUMO

Well-dispersed PdIn bimetallic alloy nanoparticles (1-4 nm) were immobilized on mesostructured silica by an in situ capture-alloying strategy, and PdIn-In2O3 interfaces were rationally constructed by changing the In2O3 loading and reduction temperature. The catalytic performance for benzyl alcohol partial oxidation was evaluated, and a catalytic synergy was observed. The Pd-rich PdIn-In2O3 interface is prone to be formed on the catalyst with a low In2O3 loading after being reduced at 300 °C. It was demonstrated that the Pd-rich PdIn-In2O3 interface was more active for benzyl alcohol partial oxidation than In-rich Pd2In3 species, which was likely to be formed at a high reduction temperature (400 °C). The high catalytic activity on the Pd-rich PdIn-In2O3 interface was attributed to the exposure of more Pd-enriched active sites, and an optimized PdIn-In2O3/Pd assemble ratio enhanced the oxygen transfer during partial oxidation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirmed that the Pd-rich Pd3In1(111)-In2O3 interface facilitated the activation of oxygen molecules, resulting in high catalytic activity.

RESUMO

In this study, a series of Al-doped metal-organic frameworks (AlxZr(1-x)-UiO-66) were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 sorption measurement, suggested that the Al doping was uniform and barely influenced the crystallinity, chemical stability, and thermal stability of the materials. Two cationic dyes, safranine T (ST) and methylene blue (MB), were selected for investigating the adsorption performances of Al-doped UiO-66 materials. Al0.3Zr0.7-UiO-66 exhibited 9.63 and 5.54 times higher adsorption capacities than UiO-66, 498 mg/g and 251 mg/g for ST and MB, respectively. The improved adsorption performance can be attributed to π-π interaction, hydrogen bond, and the coordination between the dye and Al-doped MOF. The pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models explained the adsorption process well, which indicated that the dye adsorption on Al0.3Zr0.7-UiO-66 mostly occurred through chemisorption on homogeneous surfaces. A thermodynamic study indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption capacity did not decrease significantly after four cycles.

RESUMO

Humans exhibit a broad range of post-marital residence patterns and there is growing recognition that post-marital residence predicts women's reproductive success; however, the nature of the relationship is probably dependent on whether co-resident kin are cooperators or competitors. Here, we explore this relationship in a Tibetan population, where couples practice a mixture of post-marital residence patterns, co-residing in the same village with the wife's parents, the husband's parents or endogamously with both sets of parents. Using detailed demographic data from 17 villages we find that women who live with only their own parents have an earlier age at first birth (AFB) and age at last birth (ALB) than women who live with only their parents-in-law. Women who co-reside with both sets of parents have the earliest AFB and ALB. However, those with co-resident older siblings postponed reproduction, suggestive of competition-related delay. Shifts to earlier reproductive timing were also observed in relation to the imposition of family planning policies, in line with Fisherian expectations. Our study provides evidence of the costs and benefits to women's direct fitness of co-residing with different kin, against a backdrop of adaptive responses to cultural constraints on completed fertility.

RESUMO

Birth defects have brought about major public health problems, and studying the clinical outcomes of the most common prenatal central nervous system abnormality, namely, fetal ventriculomegaly (VM), is helpful for improving reproductive health and fertility quality. This is a retrospective cohort study from 2011 to 2020 in the West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University, aiming to evaluate the short-term and long-term outcomes of VM over 37 weeks' gestation to exclude the influence of preterm birth. The study analyzed data from 401 term pregnancies, with 179 VM and 222 controls. From the short-term outcomes, the rate of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission under the VM group (10.06%) was comparatively higher than the control (0.45%), but Apgar scores between both groups at 1 min, 5 min and 10 min were not significantly different. From the long-term outcomes, there were more infants with abnormal neurodevelopment under the VM group than control (14.53% vs. 2.25%, p < 0.001). In addition, NICU admission (p = 0.006), peak width of lateral ventricles (p = 0.030) and postnatal cranial ultrasound suggestive with VM (p = 0.002) were related to infants' long-term outcomes. NICU admission during the perinatal period was an independent risk factor for the adverse long-term outcomes (OR = 3.561, 95% CI 1.029-12.320, p = 0.045). In conclusion, VM impairs short-term and long-term outcomes of term infants. Short-term outcome, especially NICU admission, could predict their adverse long-term outcomes.
